New Fund For Neighbourhood Watch

In 2009/10, as a result of the provision of £1million of Home Office funding for NHW as part of the Securing Homes Action Against Burglary (SH-AAB) programme, £500,000 will enable a new support program to be undertaken by the NHWN, who will work with a Program Manager to support the development of the Neighbourhood and Home Watch movement’s capacity, infrastructure and diversity in six key ways:

  • maximise the impact of the NHWN at a national and regional level through regional conferences and improved consultation with the grassroots
  • help to diversify NHW in some of the most challenging areas of the country at the grassroots level, and with less engaged groups, such as young people, through Junior NHW
  • examine the relationship between skills building and training provision to develop further training opportunities to build organisational and individual capacity
  • develop the existing National Network website www.mynhw.co.uk to facilitate an increase in communication at the regional level to the grassroots, to enable the administration of SH-AAB funding more readily across the country
  • Develop targeted communications to showcase and disseminate good practice
  • Encourage the sustainability of the movement at regional and local levels by raising awareness for opportunities for funding

The remaining £500,000 of the funding that has been made available will benefit Neighbourhood Watch Schemes who are able to apply for small grants to set up new Schemes or for activities that enhance current programmes, by improving home security for residents who have identified this as a priority in 93 areas across the country.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes across England and Wales can bid for grants worth up to £50,000 to cut crime and prevent burglary.

As part of a major Home Office crackdown on burglary first announced back in April, a £500,000 funding pot has been allocated to set up a Neighbourhood and Home Watch Fund.

Grants are available for both new and existing Neighbourhood Watch schemes to carry out projects that increase home security, warn local residents about the threat of crime in their area, and give them the necessary advice to deal with the threat.

Groups will be expected to work alongside Neighbourhood Policing Teams to publicise crime prevention advice in their local community.

Applications can only be made from Neighbourhood Watch schemes based in one of 90 priority local authority areas across England and Wales – locations that have been selected based on crime rates and levels of deprivation.

Priority will be given to projects that look to work with the following target groups: older people; people on low incomes; students; vulnerable young adults.

The Neighbourhood and Home Watch Fund is being run in addition to the £6 million Safer Homes Fund that has been offering third sector groups grants ranging from £10,000 to £100,000 to carry out home security improvements.

Both the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Fund and the Safer Homes Fund are open to applications until 31 July

How to Apply.

The Neighbourhood and Home Watch Fund is a £500,000 fund available for new and existing Neighbourhood and Home Watch groups to receive grants of between £1,000 and £50,000.
