Police in Avon & Somerset have been giving advice on personal safety to the elderly - by running 'Crime Reduction Bingo' at sheltered accommodation in the area.

PCSO Kylie Stevens said: "We were concerned about local residents leaving the doors to communal areas open, leaving the properties vulnerable to break-in, and so we wanted to remind people to put safety first in a fun and informal way.

"Each player has a sheet set out like a bingo card, but with words instead of numbers. We then ask questions such as 'What should you always ask for before inviting someone into your home?' and they have to check-off the boxes with the correct answers - in this case 'I.D.'

"So far the Bingo sessions have turned into a real social event for the local residents, as there has been a great turn out and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We have been very well received and everyone is really grateful for the more serious advice we were able to provide to keep them safe.

"We are now rolling out the initiative to other sheltered accommodation over the autumn period, so hopefully everyone will feel that little bit safer in their homes."
